If left unaddressed, a vision impairment can affect the lifelong learning capabilities of a child. Glasses for Kids helps alleviate this by providing an onsite service to children whilst they are at school, to address vision impairments that may have otherwise gone undiagnosed.
The first step in our program is a vision screening conducted at the school, which helps pinpoint students who might need additional eye testing. This service is provided onsite at the school, ensuring that any undetected vision issues can be promptly identified and addressed.
For those children who need it, an onsite eye test is conducted by an accredited optometrists on the same day, immediately following the initial vision screening.
For those students who are identified as having vision issues, we then provide them with custom made, high-quality glasses, ensuring that each child receives the perfect pair to aid their learning.
The Victorian Department of Education funds the Glasses for Kids program.
From 2024, an additional $2.9 million has been made available to continue the initiative.
This builds on the $2.9 million the Victorian Government has already provided to this initiative between 2015 and 2023. Now, the Victorian Government is making sure even more young Victorians can see clearly in the classroom.
Further funding of $6.8 million will triple the size of the program from 2025 – 2027 reaching a further 74,000 Prep to Grade 3 students at 473 government schools across the state.
